Franklin Lakes Man Dies After Getting Run Over At Stop & Shop

Ed Birrer, 61, died a few weeks after he was hit by a woman in the parking lot.

FRANKLIN LAKES, NJ — A borough man who was hit, dragged, and then run over by a car in the Stop & Shop parking lot earlier this year has died.

Ed Birrer died Thursday, more than a month after he was struck and dragged Jan. 27, Franklin Lakes Police Capt. John Bakelaar confirmed.

Birrer left the Stop & Shop and was crossing the entryway when he was hit from behind by a white Pontiac and dragged on the ground for about 12 feet, a police report on the incident states.

Birrer's son was a few feet in front of his father when he was hit. He banged on the Pontiac and told the driver to get off his father. The driver moved off of Birrer and ran over him with the Pontiac's back tires, police said in the report.

The driver turned left into the main entrance and could not find a parking space, so she turned into a parking aisle and thought she hit a curb, police said. The next thing she remembered was a young man banging on her car. Police said in the report that the woman did not see the man "due to a blind spot" in front of her car.

The woman was charged with careless driving, failing to signal, failure to yield to a pedestrian, and failure to keep right.
