Police reported Gardner brandished a knife and forced his way into the apartment, the chief said. He confronted Mills and stabbed him several times, Foligno said.

Gardner then left the apartment on foot. Officer Eliseo Medrano found Gardner 10 minutes later about a half mile from the apartment, Foligno said.

Police arrested Gardner, and he was taken to the Bergen County Jail.

Police provided aid to Mills at the scene. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson in critical condition.
