Astoria Boulevard Receives $1 Million For Safety Improvements

ASTORIA, QUEENS — Pedestrians in Astoria are expected to receive safer and more accessible street conditions through upgrades funded by the city’s transportation department.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez secured $1 million to improve safety conditions on Astoria Boulevard by expanding sidewalk space, shortening crossing distances, adding crossings, and adding bulbs to bus stops.

Ocasio-Cortez also secured another $14 million for projects in Queens and the Bronx, including pre-K programming, community violence interventions, and workforce training in green jobs.

“We’re looking forward to following the success of these community projects as they come to life,” said Ocasio-Cortez on Tuesday.

The Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens in Astoria received $502,250 to implement a mental health program in the facility’s teen academy. The funding is geared toward hiring social workers and counselors to help teenagers.

Make the Road NY, which offers adult literacy services in Jackson Heights, received $400,000, while New Immigrant Community Empowerment in Queens received $500,000.
