DOT To Install Traffic Light Where Astoria Girl Was Fatally Struck

The Department of Transportation announced it will install a traffic light at Newtown Rd. and 45th St. in May.

ASTORIA, QUEENS — After mounting demands from local lawmakers and residents, a traffic light will be installed at the intersection where a 7-year-old girl was fatally struck in February.

The Department of Transportation announced it will install a traffic light at Newtown Rd. and 45th St. in May. This was the same intersection where an SUV driver fatally struck Dolma Naadhun on Feb. 17 while she was crossing the street.

“No loss of life on our streets is acceptable and we continue to keep Dolma Naadhum and her family in our hearts," said DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. "We will continue to explore safety enhancements along the corridor.”

DOT conducted an "intersection control study," which recommended a traffic signal.

The department will also install stop signs on Newtown Rd. and 46th St.

DOT said it made enhancements to the crosswalk after Dolma's death, including improved crosswalk markings, a curb extension, and daylighting, which prohibits parking near the intersection to improve visibility.

The installments come after lawmakers including Council Member Julie Won, Council Member Tiffany Cabán, and Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers sent a letter to DOT demanding a traffic light be placed at the intersection.

Dolma’s 11-year-old brother started a petition in March asking the Department of Transportation to make the changes at the intersection.
