Driver Charged In Hit-And-Run That Left Astoria Teen Dead: DA

ASTORIA, QUEENS — The man from Long Island who fatally struck a 14-year-old boy in Astoria is expected to face up to seven years in prison after he was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal incident on Wednesday, prosecutors said.
Yaser Ibrahim, 18, was driving without a license when he hit cyclist Jaydan McLaurin and left the scene at 21st Street and 21st Avenue on Monday about 9:45 p.m., Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said.
He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted, and he is scheduled to come back to court on June 6, Katz said.

Ibrahim was also issued violations for speeding, having tinted windows, and having no insurance, the district attorney said.
McLaurin was riding an electric Citi Bike when Ibrahim hit the teen while driving a BMW X7 going south, prosecutors said.

The Long Island man, who only had a learner’s permit, was driving about 45 to 50 mph and hit the bicyclist in an area where the speed limit is 25 miles per hour, Katz said.
The 14-year-old was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead from severe head and body trauma, the district attorney said.
