Iguana Rescued From Astoria Apartment Fire: Report
Firefighters rescued a 4-foot-long iguana from an Astoria apartment that caught on fire Friday evening, the New York Post reported.
ASTORIA, QUEENS — Firefighters rescued a 4-foot-long iguana from an Astoria apartment that caught on fire Friday evening, according to a news report.
BBC the iguana was ferried to safety after firefighters tearing down ceilings after the fire spotted the reptile "chillin' on a bookshelf" in the apartment, a Fire Department spokesperson told the New York Post.
The pet had somehow survived the fire that broke out at his home at 23rd Street and 25th Road — flames that took 60 firefighters an hour to put out, the Post reported.

“At first I thought he was carrying a cat,” photographer Chris Clarke, who captured an image of the scene, told the Post. “Then I realized that’s not a cat — it’s huge!”
The 6-year-old iguana belongs to Farouk Sakr, who bought it as a first anniversary gift for his wife, according to the Post.

“He is very smart,” Sakr told the Post. “They are survivors — big time.”
