​School Bus Driver Fatally Strikes Scooter Rider In LIC: NYPD

A 43-year-old man died after he ran a red light and a school bus driver struck him on Thursday, police said.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A man riding a motorized scooter was fatally hit by a school bus driver in Long Island City on Thursday afternoon, police said.

A 43-year-old man died after he ran a red light on Jackson Avenue, near Queens Boulevard, and was then hit by a yellow school bus on April 20 around 5:20 p.m., the NYPD said.

The 43-year-old was riding a Fly Wing FW7 motorized scooter southbound on Jackson Avenue when a 54-year-old man driving a 2017 Ford Transit 350 yellow school bus crossed a green light and hit him, authorities said.

The scooter rider was ejected and was later taken to New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased, authorities said.

The school bus driver remained on the scene, police said. No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.

The identity of the 43-year-old scooter rider is pending family notification, the NYPD said.
