Babylon Town Bench Dedicated To Officer Who Died Of 9/11 Cancer
A ceremony at Babylon Town Hall Park was held to honor late Suffolk County Police Detective Stephen Mullen last week.

BABYLON, NY —Last week, Babylon Town officials and relatives of a late Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) detective who died from 9/11-related cancer.
Stephen Mullen volunteered to go help the city recovery efforts after the attacks in 2001. He left behind his wife Patricia and son Patrick in 2018 when he died of a 9/11-related illness at age 55.
“After 9/11 happened, Steven volunteered to go into the city, even though he told me he was being sent into the city because he had experience there. He never wanted me to worry about him,” Patricia Mullen said at the ceremony.

“If Stephen were still here today, I believe he would still be working… he loved working. He enjoyed mentoring the younger officers.”
Detective Mullen worked for the SCPD for 26 years, and before that was with the New York Police Department.

Councilman Terence McSweeney led the campaign to have the bench named for him.
“The Town of Babylon is honored to share this bench with the Mullen family because of the respect that we have for our police officers, fire, EMS and all first responders not only in the Town of Babylon, but around the country,” he said.
