Pet Of The Week: 'Calm, Gentle and Loving' Hope
"These are very scary times for all the dogs. We are pleading to our community to take a chance and meet your new best friend."- C. Franke
BABYLON, NY — Hope is a "calm, gentle and loving" mastiff mix who resides at the Babylon Animal Shelter and she's Patch's Pet of the Week.
Hope pulled through a rough upbringing with a whole lotta hope after being found on the side of the road as a "severely neglected and emaciated" stray.
At around a year old, Hope walks well on a leash, loves to play, spend time with people and is "very smart and willing to learn and please," according to Lyndsey Grosjean, who works at the shelter.

"Hope's calm, gentle and loving," Grosjean said. "She's just the best. She is an amazing girl who will make an amazing companion."
Grosjean added that hope is good with male dogs, but would need to be socialized more with females.

While those who know Hope are confident she'll be a great best friend, she's often overlooked because of her color and breed.
"Hope just loves being around people. I truly enjoy her company and look forward to spending time with her every day," Grosjean said.
Everyone could use some hope right now, and it's waiting at the Babylon Animal Shelter.
But if Hope might not be the right fit, there are plenty of other animals looking for love at the shelter, which is maxed out at full capacity.
"These are very scary times for all the dogs. We are pleading to our community to take a chance and meet your new best friend," she said.
But adoption isn't the only option she said, adding that they're "desperate for experienced dog handlers."
"Even if it is one to two hours a week, we will take it and the dogs will love you for it," Franke said.
Normal adoption hours at the shelter are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Shelter staff are also happy to train interested dog lovers, Franke said. There's also an abundance of bunnies, kittens, and cats to spend time with too.
Anyone interested in volunteering may contact the shelter by calling 631-643-9270 or emailing BASvolunteers80@gmail.com.
The shelter is hosting an adoption event on Saturday, March 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be raffles, baked goods and adoptable pets to meet.
