Pet Of The Week: 'Super Sweet And Loving' Buttercup Longs For A Family

"It's hard to explain to a dog why they are here now and that their family has moved on without them." - Shelter volunteer Christine Franke.

BABYLON, NY — "Beautiful" Buttercup is a resident of the Babylon Animal Shelter and is the Pet of the Week.

Buttercup, a Corso mix, is just 18 months old and is a "super sweet, loving pup," long-time shelter volunteer Christine Franke told Patch.

"She walks easily on a leash and would just make such an awesome addition to a family," Franke added.

And a family is what Buttercup yearns to return to since her first family surrendered her when they had to move and couldn't take her along.

"It’s hard to explain to a dog why they are here now and that their family has moved on without them," Franke said. "It’s a heartbreaking process."

Although Buttercup is making the best of her time at the shelter with games of fetch being her favorite, she's "very stressed" by the noisy, overcrowded shelter and dreams of finding her forever home. In fact, Franke says Buttercup would love to get out of the shelter "like yesterday."

"Buttercup is adorable, playful, smart, outgoing and dog-social. She really enjoys a game of fetch and when we have the time for it, we try to make that happen for her," said staff member Lyndsey Grosjean. "After the game, she will just be happy to lay in the grass."

If you would like to meet Buttercup or any of her roommates, come on down to the Babylon Animal Shelter.

Adoption hours are currently Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

In the meantime, the shelter specifically needs experienced large dog handlers and its staff is happy to train interested dog lovers.

There's also an abundance of bunnies, kittens and cats to spend time with too, Franke said. Anyone interested in volunteering may contact the shelter by calling the number above or emailing BASvolunteers80@gmail.com.
