Vigil Planned At Babylon Town Hall To Honor Renee Good

Residents are expected to gather on Saturday to honor the Minneapolis mother who was fatally shot during an encounter with ICE officers.

BABYLON, NY — Local activists will be organizing a vigil and peaceful protest scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Babylon Town Hall, according to the group's social media page.

The event follows the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis mother who was shot Wednesday morning during an encounter involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

In a post on social media, the group describes gathering to mourn the loss of Good and a protest focused on opposition to federal immigration enforcement and U.S. foreign policy. The materials reference calls for an end to wars abroad and criticism of ICE operations, as well as opposition to the Trump administration.

Event materials list the location as 200 Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst, outside Babylon Town Hall.

A statement responding to Good’s death was issued by the Suffolk County Democratic Committee, which expressed outrage over the shooting and called for accountability, oversight, and adherence to the rule of law in federal law enforcement actions.

“As details continue to emerge, we hold space for the facts, but we do not need to wait for answers to name the harm and fear this moment represents,” the Suffolk County Democratic Committee said in its statement.

Federal officials have said the shooting was an act of self-defense, stating that the woman used her vehicle in an attempt to strike officers. City leaders and witnesses in Minneapolis have disputed that account. The incident is under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the FBI.

Good has been identified as the mother of a young child. Her death has prompted protests and vigils nationwide.

Organizers said the Babylon Town Hall protest is open to the public.
