Village Pool Reopens After Rebuilding Delays

Sandy-damaged pool and grounds back open less than a year later.

Talk about good timing – the Babylon Village pool reopened to its residents on July 6 after taking a brutal beatdown from Hurricane Sandy in October that crippled the popular park.

"The pools are open – both of them," village trustee Tony Davida happily announced during the July 9 board meeting. "Everything necessary was completed – still some work being done down there, so just a little inconvenience."

Opening weekend on July 6 was reportedly a success as villagers packed into the bayfront pool at the end of Fire Island Avenue South.

"It was a great weekend down there – a tremendous amount of people," Davida said. "We're looking forward to a great season."

With temperatures expected to top the 90-degree mark this week, the reopening was just in the nick of time for villagers looking to cool down.

The pool was heavily damaged during the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy, with the pool's outer walls sustaining major damage and other buildings on the property being damaged. Davida initially estimated the damages sustained during the storm would cost over $1 million.

The pool was originally scheduled for a June 22 opening, but work delays caused the village to push the opening date back. Davida said work was completed just in time for the July 6 opening.
