West Babylon Science Olympiad Students Kick Off Season With National-Level Competitions

More than 50 West Babylon Senior High School students competed in two major virtual invitational tournaments.

WEST BABYLON, NY — West Babylon Senior High School’s Science Olympiad program launched its 2025–26 season with a strong showing, competing in two major virtual invitational tournaments.

Led by Head Coach Andrea Durbin, with Assistant Coaches Kerry Reinhart and Loretta Salerno, the program has expanded to include more than 50 students across four competitive teams. Three teams competed in the virtual Dick Smith Memorial Invitational Tournament, while a fourth team participated in the virtual Boyceville Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament—both highly regarded events that attract top Science Olympiad programs from across the country.

Throughout the weeklong competitions, students took part in 25 national-level STEM events, working in pairs and small groups on challenges that tested their engineering skills, problem-solving abilities and scientific knowledge. This year’s build events included hovercrafts, robots, electric vehicles, boomilevers, bungee drops, and helicopters. Students also completed rigorous test-based events in subjects such as astronomy, entomology, forensics, and electrical circuitry.
