West Babylon Second Graders Learn About The White House
Students explored the history, purpose and significance of the White House as part of a social studies unit on government.
WEST BABYLON, NY — Second-grade students in Ann Fitzpatrick’s class at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District recently explored the history and importance of the White House as part of their “government at work” unit in social studies.
After reading informational texts about the president’s home, students focused on identifying the author’s message and key details presented in the readings. To demonstrate their understanding, each student selected eight facts they learned about the White House, highlighting its role in American government, its history, and its unique features.
The lesson strengthened students’ reading comprehension skills while helping them build background knowledge about one of the nation’s most important landmarks.
