BAY SHORE, NY — Local resident Brittany Walker has been elected to the Board of Directors of Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank.

The two-fold mission of Long Island Cares is to bring together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry and food-insecure on Long Island, and to provide for the humanitarian needs community.

What sets Long Island Cares apart is its commitment to equipping individuals and families with a holistic toolkit for self-sufficiency, Walker told Patch.

"I am truly honored to be a part of LI Cares, an organization that transcends traditional charity work by not only addressing immediate needs through its food pantries but also by providing comprehensive education and resources," she said. "Through its well-rounded programs, the organization empowers people to make healthier choices, pursue career and personal goals, and foster thriving communities."

Walker has experience in both the financial and non-profit sectors, which makes her an asset to the Board of Directors, Long Island Cares officials said.

She is a member of the Advisory Board Council for DISCOVER, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating “a network of supply chain professionals focused on building bridges and breaking down barriers for people of color.”

"Engaging in non-profit charity work holds profound personal significance for me," she said. "My parents both grew up in households that received government assistance. Their experiences propelled them to building a business together that has been successful for three decades. With their success came trials and tribulations, but they remained steadfast in giving back to others and involved my sister and I at a young age. My fondest childhood memories involve providing food and presents to families during Thanksgiving and Christmas which created a lasting impression of the transformative power of generosity."

Walker has held key positions at institutions such as North Shore LIJ Health System, BDO USA LLP, and Marcum LLP. Before her current role as Vice President of Strategic Planning at Walker SCM LLC, she served as the Director of Corporate Administration & Communications at the same company, overseeing the diversity, equity, and inclusion program, among other responsibilities. Based in Valley Stream, Walker SCM is a global transportation and logistics company and is one of the largest certified minority business enterprises in the logistics industry.

"We provide optimized and integrated supply chain management solutions for our customers to address their evolving business needs," she said.

She is a graduate of the Boston School of Management with a B.S. in Business Administration and dual concentrations in finance and accounting.

"By leveraging my background, I aim to enhance the impact of LI Cares, ensuring that it continues to be a beacon of support and empowerment for those it serves," she told Patch. "My role on the Board is to contribute a unique perspective shaped by both personal and professional experiences. I look forward to collaborating with the dedicated Board Members, employees, and volunteers to further the organization's mission. Being part of an organization like LI Cares allows me to contribute to a cause that makes a meaningful impact every day. It aligns with my belief that success should be shared and that no one is immune to life's uncertainties. The act of giving is not only a responsibility but a source of fulfillment, creating a ripple effect that touches lives and strengthens communities."

Walker said she wholeheartedly recommended that business and professional people engage in non-profit charity work.

"While professional success is gratifying, the opportunity to be part of something bigger, impacting people's livelihoods and the community, is invaluable. It adds a profound dimension to one's life and career, providing a sense of purpose that far transcends individual achievements," she said.
