'Hope And Healing': LI Unites To Help Child Mauled By Pit Bull

A fundraiser has been created to help a 9-year-old girl whose face was attacked by her neighbor's pit bull on Long Island last week.

BAY SHORE, NY — A 9-year-old girl who suffered a brutal attack by a neighbor's pit bull last weekend is facing a long road to recovery and the Long Island community is coming together to help her family navigate the journey.

On Saturday morning, the girl was mauled and seriously injured after the pit bull ran out of its home and attacked her in her driveway, police told Patch. She was transported to South Shore University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries and the Town of Islip Animal Shelter and the SPCA were notified, police said.

As her family tries to stay strong and navigate her recovery, her cousin, Dylan Owens created a GoFundMe to help with Daniella's recovery journey.

"She suffered severe injuries to her face and head (hundreds of stitches and multiple staples), nearly losing an eye, and the trauma has been heartbreaking for her and the family.

"After being rushed to the hospital, she's now home, but her recovery will be long and uncertain, with multiple surgeries and ongoing medical care ahead.

"We're raising funds to support Daniella and her parents with the medical bills and to help ease their burden during this difficult time.

"Your donation, no matter the amount, will bring hope and healing to her life. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and support."

A Town of Islip representative told Patch that animal control officers issued a summons to the dog owner for having a dog without a license and that the victim’s family can file a dangerous dog complaint with the Fifth District Court. If they do so, a judge will make a decision about the dog, the rep said.
