LI's First LGBTQ+ Health Fair Comes To Bay Shore On Saturday

The LGBT Network is hosting Long Island's first LGBT health fair to address critical health disparities and discrimination in healthcare.

BAY SHORE, NY— Long Island's first LGBT health fair will take place in Bay Shore on Saturday, Nov. 9. at noon.

According to the LGBT Network, healthcare providers, advocates, and community members to tackle the unique health challenges and discrimination facing the LGBTQ+ community including critical health disparities and discrimination in healthcare.

The organization said the fair aims to provide a "safe, inclusive space for LGBTQ+ individuals to access essential resources, confront healthcare barriers, and ensure they receive the respect and care they deserve."

In a statement, the LGBT Network said that fear of discrimination and poor experiences in healthcare settings causes many members of the LGBTQ+ community to avoid or delay essential care.

The fair will offer screenings, resources, and discussions on key health issues impacting LGBTQ+ individuals, including:

  • Mental Health: LGBTQ+ individuals face elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD, worsened by discrimination and social stigma. The fair will offer mental health screenings and resources for safe, inclusive care.
  • HIV/AIDS and STI prevention: Disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, gay men and other LGBTQ+ individuals need accessible, affirming testing and preventive services. Information on HIV prevention, such as PrEP, will be available, along with resources for STI testing and care.
  • Substance abuse: Stigmatization and lack of support contribute to higher rates of substance abuse among LGBTQ+ individuals. The fair will connect attendees to supportive local programs, addressing substance use and promoting long-term health.
  • Cancer prevention and screening: LGBTQ+ individuals are at increased risk for certain cancers, including anal, lung, and liver cancers. Attendees will learn about preventive care and connect with providers who prioritize culturally competent screenings.
  • Discrimination and safe healthcare spaces: Many LGBTQ+ individuals report fear, discrimination, or poor treatment when seeking care. The fair will provide resources on finding LGBTQ-friendly healthcare providers who prioritize safety, respect, and inclusivity.
  • Chronic Health Conditions: Stress and discrimination contribute to higher rates of chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes, among LGBTQ+ people. Resources will be available for managing and preventing these conditions within supportive, affirming environments.
  • Violence and victimization support: With high rates of intimate partner violence and hate crimes affecting LGBTQ+ individuals, the fair will offer access to resources and support services for those impacted by violence.

The Long Island LGBT Health Fair will provide a welcoming and safe environment where LGBTQ+ individuals can access critical health resources, learn about their rights, and connect with affirming providers.

The fair is slated for Saturday, Nov.9, at noon at the LGBT Network Bay Shore Center at 34 Park Ave. in Bay Shore.
