She is set to transition to her new position while the hospital's outgoing leader, Donna Moravick, takes on a new, community role.

BAY SHORE, NY — A Suffolk County hospital will soon have a new leader.
Northwell Health recently appointed Irene Macyk, PhD, RN, as executive director of South Shore University Hospital (SSUH), effective Winter 2023.
She is set to transition to her new position while the hospital’s outgoing leader, Donna Moravick, RN, NP, MBA, takes on a new, community facing role focused on supporting Northwell’s efforts in Bay Shore and surrounding communities, a release said.

Moravick has had a 42-year career at Northwell, and over the last nearly 13 years, she has played an "integral role in the transformation of SSUH."
Since 2020, Macyk has served as the associate executive director and chief nursing officer at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), where she had strategic oversight of the nursing care provided throughout the hospital.

During her tenure with NSUH, Macyk helped fuel the growth of the hospital’s transplant and trauma programs and led the nursing team to its successful recertification as a Magnet hospital in 2022.
Prior to NSUH, she held the same position at Lenox Hill Hospital, Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital (MEETH), and Lenox Health Greenwich Village, achieving ANCC Magnet designation in 2020, a release said.
“Dr. Macyk is a proven leader known for consistently elevating her teams with her management expertise, skills and passion,” said Michael J. Dowling, Northwell’s president and chief executive officer. “With her extensive clinical and administrative knowledge, I am confident that she will set a vision and strategy well suited to support the healthcare needs of the community.”
Earlier in her career, Macyk also held leadership roles throughout the health system, including senior administrative director of patient care services at NSUH, and director of nursing education and quality improvement at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.
She earned her PhD in nursing from Adelphi University and holds a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree in nursing.
A credentialed leader, she also completed the Wharton Leadership and the Academy GE Fellows programs.
She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and is the recipient of the New York Organization of Nurse Executives and Leaders’ Innovation Award (NYONEL) as well as the New York State Nurses Association’s (NYSNA) Excellence in Nursing Education Award.
In addition to her professional work, Macyk's relationship with SSUH is a personal one — she and her three children were all born there.
“I’ve been fortunate to work in various positions within Northwell Health for 17 years, and I have witnessed SSUH’s transformation from a community hospital into a leading tertiary facility,” said Macyk. “I look forward to building upon the achievements made by Ms. Moravick and I’m excited for what the future holds.”
