New York Yankees Call Up Former Long Island High-Schooler

BAY SHORE, NY — A Bay Shore alumni is looking good in pinstripes.

Greg Weissert, 27, was promoted Thursday to the New York Yankees from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, multiple media outlets reported. He'll be available for the team's series against the Oakland A's, replacing starter Nestor Cortes.

The right-hander stands 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs about 215 pounds. Drafted in the 16th round in 2016 out of Fordham, Weissert has become known for his spin rate, with a 2,900 rpm breaking ball.

Weissert graduated from Bay Shore in 2013. He wore No. 6 for the team and finished the high school season with an overall record of 11-11.

This season in Triple A, Weissert has pitched 46 innings in relief and is averaging about 13 strikeouts and 3.72 walks per nine innings, according to Fangraphs. His ERA sits at a sparkling 1.76.
