South Shore Hospital Honored With Award For Excellence

Two intensive care units at South Shore University Hospital were honored with excellence awards.

BAY SHORE, NY —Two of South Shore University Hospital's critical care units have been honored with the Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

SSUH's cardiothoracic intensive care unit received the Beacon Award for Excellence—the program’s highest honor— and its neurosurgical intensive care unit was awarded the Silver Beacon Award for Excellence, hospital officials announced on Thursday.

According to the hospital, the Beacon Award recognizes hospital units that exemplify excellence in patient care, collaboration and a healthy work environment. For patients and their families, the award signifies care that puts patients first. For nurses, it reflects a positive, supportive environment with greater teamwork, higher morale, and lower turnover rates, the hospital said.

"This incredible recognition is a testament to the expertise, compassion and dedication of our nurses and interdisciplinary teams," said RJ Civello, RN, SSUH's chief nursing officer "This award is a symbol of excellence that reflects our ongoing commitment to providing the highest level of care and ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients."

The program evaluates hospital units across three key modules including, patient outcomes, work environment and its nursing workforce.

To achieve a Beacon Award, units must excel across all three modules. Units that demonstrate top-tier performance at a module level may still receive recognition, ensuring that even incremental progress is celebrated.

"We are incredibly proud of both our CTICU and Neuro ICU teams for their outstanding achievements," said Irene Macyk, PhD, RN, SSUH president. "These awards not only highlight the exceptional patient care delivered at our hospital but also the collaborative culture and supportive environment we strive to create for our staff every day."
