South Shore University Hospital Breaks Ground On $486M Pavilion

The 190,000 square-foot pavilion accommodate up to 90 private patient rooms, and more.

BAY SHORE, NY — Town of Islip officials, benefactors and medical staff, celebrated the beginning of a brand-new chapter at South Shore University Hospital on Wednesday.

Northwell Health announced its $468 million groundbreaking for a 190,000 square-foot pavilion on the hospital campus.

The six-story inpatient bed-tower will accommodate up to 90 private patient rooms, 10 additional operating rooms and three additional procedure rooms, a release said.

It will also include green and public space, and a sky bridge that will connect to the existing facility.

“This pavilion is a symbol of what is happening here at South Shore University Hospital," said Michael J. Dowling, Northwell’s president and chief executive officer. “We saw the enormous potential in this community to convert SSUH from a community hospital to a premier tertiary campus.”

Named one of New York’s best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, and as Northwell Health’s flagship hospital in Suffolk County, SSUH remains committed to expanding both services and quality of care to its residents.

“South Shore University Hospital is in the middle of an incredible transformation, a renaissance,” said Donna Moravick, RN, NP, MBA, executive director, SSUH. “World-class care is available right here in Bay Shore and I am proud of our team for making it possible."

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Community Board President, Peter Hoffman and SSUH Executive Director, Donna Moravick, also attended the event.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
