South Shore University Hospital Receives 'A' Leapfrog Group Rating

The grade reflects a hospital's commitment to patient safety.

BAY SHORE, NY — South Shore University Hospital is ranked at the top of the class.

In a report issued by the Leapfrog Group on Wednesday, South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore earned a top ‘A’ safety grade for Spring 2023, demonstrating the health system’s commitment to patient safety and achievements in promoting the best outcomes.

It is one of eight Northwell hospitals, including six on Long Island, to earn this grade.

This is the first time in three years that South Shore University Hospital received an 'A' safety grade, according to Leapfrog Group's website.

In Fall and Spring 2022, the hospital received a 'B' safety grade. It was ranked a 'C' grade in Fall 2021 and a 'D' grade in Spring 2021 and Fall and Spring 2020.

The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization, assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to nearly 3,000 acute-care hospitals nationwide, which is based on 30 evidence-based patient safety performance measures, a release said. According to the 2023 Leapfrog report, about 29 percent of all hospitals received an ‘A’ safety rating.
