2-Year-Old Fatally Hit By SUV Driver In Bayside, Police Say

The child wandered away from her mom in front of the SUV just as the driver, who is reportedly​ the mom's boyfriend, drove off, police said.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — A 2-year-old child, who was helping her mother unload packages from an SUV in Bayside, wandered in front of the car and was fatally hit by the driver, police said Monday.

Around 10 p.m. on Sunday the young mother, 23, began taking packages out of the back of a Nissan Rogue at 216th Street near 38th Avenue. The child, who was initially standing next to her mother, walked to the front of the SUV as the driver, who sources reported to be the mom's boyfriend, drove off, hitting the girl.

The two 23-year-olds rushed the child to the nearby Flushing Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police sources told the NY Daily News that the incident was a "horrible accident."

As of Monday morning there are no arrests and the investigation by the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad remains ongoing.
