Bayside, Douglaston COVID Rates Close To All-Time Highs: Data

Weeks into the city's latest COVID-19 surge, virus rates are as high in Bayside and Douglaston as they have ever been.

BAYSIDE-DOUGLASTON, QUEENS —Weeks into the city's latest COVID-19 surge, more than a sixth of people in Bayside and Douglaston tested positive last week, according to the latest city data.

This latest jump in cases began in mid-November and have spiked in December.

Hospitalizations remain low over the past 28 days; the 6 deaths reported in Bayside from Nov. 17-Dec.14 represent the highest rate of deaths in the city during that time period (22.8 deaths per 100,000 people).

From Dec. 19-25, 1,130 people in the seven ZIP codes that span Bayside and Douglaston tested positive for COVID-19. That is a positivity rate of about 17.5 percent across ZIP codes 11360, 11361, 11364, 11004, 11005, 11363, and 11362.

The rate of positive cases in Bayside and Douglaston is close to levels reported in January 2021, the highest rate on record.

The highly contagious omicron variant is now the city's dominant strain, according to health officials, and the city as a whole reported 27,774 new positive tests on Tuesday — just behind the record set days earlier of 31,024 new cases.
