Bayside Landmark Honoring Abolitionist Undergoes $500k Renovations
The city broke ground on renovations for Captain Dermody Triangle, located at 216th Street and 48th Avenue.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — The city broke ground on renovating a Bayside landmark honoring a Civil War-era abolitionist on Friday.
Captain Dermody Triangle, located at 216th Street and 48th Avenue, is undergoing $500,000 renovations through a grant from the NYS Dormitory Authority.
The renovations include new entrances, enhanced ADA accessibility, and new benches.

The former bronze plaque will be replicated and mounted on the existing boulder.
The triangle honors Captain William C. Dermody, an abolitionist who was fatally wounded in the Civil War on May 12, 1864, during the Battle of Spotsylvania in Virginia.

Dermody volunteered with the 67th New York Infantry and served in Company K, the first regiment of Long Island volunteers.
