"5 Things You Should Know" will jump-start you into a productive week. Be the first to know about parking changes, important meetings, free events and the hottest get-togethers in and around Bed-Stuy:
1. TRANSART invites you to celebrate jazz music and culture at the annual Jazz Treasures: Legacy, Legend and Heritage honoring jazz legend Randy Weston. Today, Monday, October 17, at 6:30 pm at the Rotunda at Brooklyn Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon Street. There will be an award ceremony, a reception and live music. The event will be catered by chef JJ Johnson. Suggested contributions are $50, $30 and $20 (students, youth and young adults 13-21).
2. The Bedford Central Community Development Corp is embarking on its 6th Annual Home Buyer Seminar Series. This year will offer the most comprehensive sessions given by experienced professionals in a pressure free and non-predatory environment. The first of 16 seminars, “Getting Ready for Home Purchase,” is on Tuesday, October 18, at 6:30pm, Bedford Central Presbyterian Church, 1200 Dean St. $20 for each seminar. 3. You MUST RSVP this week for the Achievement First Visitor Day if you are interested in enrolling your child in this amazing new school. The mission of Achievement First is to deliver on the promise of equal educational opportunity for all of America’s children. With 11 schools in Brooklyn, we currently serve over 3,000 students across Brownsville, Bushwick, Crown Heights, East New York and Bedford-Stuyvesant. 4. Sacred Yoga is hosting a free kids demo class with Amayo of Antibalas fame, on Thursday, October 20, at 4:30 pm, 197 Clifton Place between Bedford and Franklin Avenues. Sacred is a yoga and movement studio that primarily specializes in hot yoga. It also offers high-energy movement classes, meditation, and pole dancing. The studio has movement classes just for kids as well as Family Jam dance parties the first Sunday of each month

5. This Friday, October 21, Family Dynamics Beacon Center will be hosting a celebration rally encouraging women in the Bed-Stuy community to get tested for Breast Cancer. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month The Teens On The Move program will host the rally at MS35, located at 272 MacDonough Street (b/w Lewis Ave & Marcus Garvey Blvd) in Brooklyn, from 6:00pm – 11:00pm.
