BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — More than half of all Bed-Stuy residents are now fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, marking a long-awaited milestone for the neighborhood's lagging distribution of the shot.

The last of Bed-Stuy's five ZIP codes, 11233 — which has had some of the lowest vaccine rates in the city — recently surpassed the 50-percent rate for all ages, meaning 50.51 percent of all residents had gotten both doses of the shot as of Monday, data shows.

The ZIP code, which also includes parts of Crown Heights and Brownsville, is the third-to-last among New York City's 145 ZIP codes to reach the milestone.

In some ZIP codes, the full vaccination rate is as high as 99 percent, data shows. The highest rate in Brooklyn is found in Sunset Park, where 96.5 percent of residents had been fully vaccinated as of Monday.

The lagging numbers in Bed-Stuy come despite a surge in vaccination rates in recent months as new mandates took effect and officials focused on improving areas where vaccine distribution has fallen behind.

In 11233, the vaccine rate increased by nearly 10 percentage points between October and late August, when New York City began requiring proof of vaccination at indoor restaurants, museums and gyms. Citywide vaccination rates have likewise risen since then.

More recently, New York City has imposed a vaccine mandate for all public workers and has started focusing on distributing doses to children between 5 and 11, who were recently approved to get the shot.
