Bed-Stuy Teen Identified As Charter Student Shot Dead In Brooklyn Park
Unique Smith, 15, was fatally shot minutes after leaving Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School Wednesday afternoon, police said.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — A charter school student fatally shot in a Brooklyn park has been identified as a Bed-Stuy teen, police announced Thursday.
Unique Smith, 15, succumbed to critical injuries following the daylight shooting in McLaughlin Park Wednesday afternoon, the NYPD announced Thursday.
Unique was talking to two girls on a park bench near Tillary Street and Flatbush avenue when two other school-aged boys came over and started to argue, police said.

One of the boys — who wore all black and a ski mask — whipped out a gun and shot Unique in the stomach, according to Chief of Detectives James Essig.
"It's always a concern to return to school," Essig said at a Wednesday press conference. "We see the shooting victims, the shooting perpetrators, younger and younger."

The teen — who had just left Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School on Jay and Sands streets — was rushed to Methodist Hospital in Park Slope, said police.
According to police, Unique lived on Decatur Street in Stuyvesant Heights.
