Bed-Stuy Vaccine Rates Still Among Lowest In NYC Despite Boost

The Brooklyn ZIP codes, which have lagged since the start of the vaccine distribution, are still low despite boosts from vaccine mandates.

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — Despite major spikes in recent months, some of Bed-Stuy's ZIP codes still lag the rest of the city in vaccination rates against the coronavirus, data shows.

As of Monday, three of the five ZIP codes that include parts of Bed-Stuy were among the 10 New York City ZIP codes with the lowest rate of people who had gotten at least one dose of the vaccine, according to city data.

The rates — all just above 50 percent of the total population — are far behind the city's 71-percent partial vaccination rate and other parts of Bed-Stuy, where as many as 67 percent of the population have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine, data shows.

The ZIP code with the lowest vaccine rate in the neighborhood has consistently been 11233, which includes parts of Brownsville and Crown Heights.

The partial vaccination rate in that ZIP code only just reached 50 percent for all ages in late September, while Brooklyn as a whole reached its halfway marker to getting all residents vaccinated back in early July, data shows.

Here's where the rates stood for each ZIP code as of Monday:

  • 11233 Bedford-Stuyvesant (East)/Ocean Hill-Brownsville: 52% partially vaccinated, 45% fully vaccinated
  • 11205 Bedford-Stuyvesant (West)/Clinton Hill/Fort Greene: 52% partially vaccinated, 48% fully vaccinated
  • 11206 Williamsburg (South): 55% partially vaccinated, 49% fully vaccinated
  • 1216 Bedford-Stuyvesant (West)/Crown Heights (West): 67% partially vaccinated, 61% fully vaccinated
  • 11221 Bedford-Stuyvesant (East)/Bushwick: 67% partially vaccinated, 59% fully vaccinated

The lagging numbers come despite a surge in Bed-Stuy's vaccination rates in recent months as new mandates took effect and officials focused on improving areas where vaccine distribution has fallen behind.

In 11233, the vaccine rate has increased by nearly 10 percentage points since late August, when New York City began requiring proof of vaccination at indoor restaurants, museums and gyms. Citywide vaccination rates have likewise risen since then.

Officials have said they expect vaccine rates to continue to rise given additional mandates, including one for healthcare workers and another for city teachers that went into effect last week.
