Two men were shot while walking down the steps into Brooklyn’s Utica Avenue subway station near Fulton Street, which services the A and C lines, just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday evening, police say.

Both men were shot in the back, an NYPD spokesman told Patch.

One of the victims, 27 years old, is in critical condition and “likely” to die, the police spokesman said. The other victim, 34 years old, is expected to live.

The victims are being treated at Kings County Hospital in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens.

Multiple news outlets reported that there had been a fight on the sidewalk before the shooting. According to to PIX11, which cited “sources,” one of the victims was targeted and the other was a bystander.

“The blood trail begins on the street,” a police source told the New York Daily News. “They were running down the steps.”

Chaka Parker, a 35-year-old witness to the shooting, said in an interview the New York Post:

“There was one woman screaming, ‘I could have been shot. I could have been shot.’ One officer came out of the train station and said ‘Where did he go?’ and everyone pointed. Everyone just scattered. It was scary.”

As of 7:20 p.m., the NYPD did not have a suspect in custody, and trains were still bypassing the Utica Avenue station in both directions due to an active crime scene at the station.

Twitter user @ParisBurned noted that the area around the Utica Avenue station is “very dark and seedy at night.” He said he personally knows three people who were robbed or mugged outside the station.
