UPDATES: Escaped Brooklyn Prisoner Evades NYPD

Gerald Brooks, wanted for domestic violence, slipped from custody early Tuesday morning, police say.

UPDATE, Dec. 2: Six weeks later, police say they finally have Brooks back in custody.

Original story:

A 39-year-old Canarsie resident named Gerald Brooks slipped from NYPD custody as he was being arrested around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, according to cops.

Brooks had been handcuffed on Sheffield Avenue near New Lots Avenue in east Brooklyn and was being escorted to a police vehicle, an NYPD spokesman told Patch.

However, ”as he was being escorted to the vehicle, he pushed away from investigators and ran off,” the spokesman said.

Nine hours later, at 2:30 p.m., police were still hunting for their guy.

Police are holding “several domestic violence-related warrants” for Brooks’ arrest, an NYPD spokeswoman told Patch. He’s also wanted for a felony traffic crime, she said.

The suspect is described as around six feet tall with his hair in “long black dreadlocks.” He was last seen wearing a red baseball cap, a blue hooded jacket and blue jeans, police said.

Cops lost sight of him as he fled northbound on Georgia Avenue towards New Lots Avenue.

If you’ve seen Brooks or a man matching his description, police ask that you call their Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted online or by texting 274637, then entering TIP577.

Asked if the missing man is dangerous, a police spokesman said: “I wouldn’t approach him. Just call our tip line.”

CBS New York points out that Tuesday’s escapee is the fifth prisoner to slip from NYPD shackles since May.
