BROOKLYN, NY — A state initiative aiming to increase vaccination rates in areas where they remain low will bring a new distribution site to Broadway Junction this week, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced.

The governor said Monday that resources from pop-up vaccine sites at Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station will be moved on Tuesday to two new sites at Broadway Junction and East 180th Street station in Manhattan.

The distribution sites will offer one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccines to anyone at the station, including those visiting New York, without the need for an appointment. Those who get the shot will be given a free seven-day MetroCard or a free round trip on the Long Island Railroad of Metro North, she said.

"More people are returning to the workplace in-person, and with the increase in ridership across the MTA system we have a great opportunity to reach even more people with pop-up sites at station stops," Hochul said. "If you still need to get your shot and are passing by one of these stations, you can just walk in to get the single-dose vaccine and then be on your way. It's that seamless, and it's the best thing you can do to better protect yourself and others from COVID-19."

So far, more than 34,000 people have been vaccinated at pop-up locations set up at MTA, Long Island Railroad and Metro North stations since the program launched in May, Hochul said.

The latest sites were chosen based on the low vaccination rates of their surrounding areas and the easy access to the site for, in the case of Broadway Junction, local Brooklyn and Queens residents.

The 11233 ZIP code that includes Broadway Junction has the fourth-lowest vaccination rate in New York City's ZIP codes and Brooklyn is the least-vaccinated of the five boroughs, according to city data. As of Monday, 51 percent of people in the 11233 ZIP code have gotten at least their first dose of the vaccine, data shows.

The Broadway Junction pop-up site will be one between 3 and 8 p.m. each day.
