Driver Was Drunk When She Hit A Pedestrian, Cyclist In Bed-Stuy: NYPD

A 20-year-old accused of slamming into a pedestrian and cyclist in Brooklyn was speeding and had been drinking, police said.

BED-STUY, NY — A young driver accused of slamming into a pedestrian and cyclist in Bed-Stuy had drank alcohol, court records show.

Crystal DeJesus, 20, faces charges including driving while ability impaired, vehicular assault, speeding and reckless driving related to Sunday's crash near Halsey Street and Tompkins Avenue, court records show.

Police also say DeJesus was driving an unregistered vehicle without insurance.

DeJesus was traveling westbound on Halsey Street Sunday night when she crashed into a 19-year-old pedestrian and 32-year-old cyclist near Tompkins Avenue, according to the NYPD.

The young pedestrian was hospitalized with a severe head injury and the biker was in stable condition, according to the New York Daily News.

Sunday's crash was just one of multiple to shake Brooklyn this week — including 78-year-old Yvonne Sandiford, who was fatally struck by back-to-back hit-and-run drivers in Bed-Stuy.

"The City of New York has the tools to stop traffic violence, especially for older New Yorkers, but lacks the political will to make our streets safe," said Transportation Alternatives Executive Director Danny Harris.
