Earth's Basket on Quincy
Organic food, great atmosphere and a really attractive staff!
Hamza Jaber’s family wanted to start a business.
After moving to Bed-Stuy and surveying the food options, they decided to open an organic food store when they found the quality food products were too few and far between.
Earth’s Basket, an organic food market, located at 325 Quincy Street between Nostrand and Marcy avenues in Bed-Stuy debuted almost two months ago today.
Earth’s Basket is their second location. The family owns another one in Park Slope on 17th Street and 4th Avenue.
But the Jabers are Bed-Stuy residents, so this store holds a special place in their hearts, and according to Jaber, 80 percent of the inventory was chosen by the customer.
“I know mostly everybody in the neighborhood. Plus one of our workers used to own a barbershop here, so he knows the whole neighborhood too,” said Jaber. “So, before we opened, we just handed out flyers and whatever the residents proposed we get, we got.
“Once we opened, if didn’t work, it didn’t work. If it did, it stayed.”
Not unlike many of the organic mini-markets in the neighborhood, the store has a corner-store setup and feel. And similar to the other Bed-Stuy organic food markets, it carries the corner store staples, right alongside of the organic food staples to meet the needs of Bed-Stuy’s burgeoning fresh food shoppers.
The store carries Amy’s Organic frozen food products, organic eggs, milk and cheese and dairy products. Yogi and Tazo teas, Bear Naked cereals, fresh organic produce, Kind bars, organic snacks and environmentally friendly cleaning products.
“But around this area, all the people that come in tell us that our produce section is by far the best,” said Jaber. “The other stores have apples and bananas, the basics... but no celery, no cabbage or jalapeno peppers. And all of our produce is organic.”
You can make your own fresh salads on site at Earth’s Basket and Jaber claims they also make the best sandwiches around.
But what Jaber says makes his store stand heads above the rest is the vibe, which he describes as friendly and attractive:
“The atmosphere here is really good… and our workers are the most beautiful,” he said jokingly as a nod to himself.
Earth's Basket is opened Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. - 10:30 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.
