Serial Brooklyn Burglar Faces Up To 12 Years In Prison, DA Says

Casey Knight was sentenced to six to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to a string of burglaries in Brooklyn apartments, the DA said.

BROOKLYN, NY — A man who broke in and robbed at least three Brooklyn apartments in 2018 has been sentenced to at least six years in prison, prosecutors announced.

Casey Knight, 53, was sentenced Monday to six to 12 years in prison following a guilty plea earlier this month for the 2018 break-ins, which included empty apartments in Bushwick, Bed-Stuy and Clinton Hill, prosecutors said.

“This defendant is a serial burglar who has shown that he will continue to invade the sanctity of people’s homes if he remains at large, necessitating this prison sentence," Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said. "My Office is committed to protecting the safety and property of everyone living in Brooklyn and will continue to prosecute those who victimize our neighbors.”

Knight, who is from Staten Island, pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree burglary. His sentence includes three consecutive prison terms of two to four years for the each of those counts, prosecutors said.

The string of burglaries unfolded in the span of just over a week in October 2018.

In the first, on Oct. 24, a man returned to his home on Sudyam Street in Bushwick, heard noises in the basement and then saw Knight running out the cellar door. Two laptops were missing from the home, prosecutors said.

Investigators later discovered Knight on surveillance video breaking into the residence through the cellar door, prosecutors said.

Just a few days later, a woman in Bed-Stuy was alerted that the alarm at her Lafayette Avenue home had been activated and discovered that about $13,000 worth of jewelry was missing form her roommate's bedroom, officials said. Video surveillance caught Knight breaking in through a windowpane of a door, according to prosecutors.

Finally, in early November, a man who had left for vacation on Oct. 31 returned to his Clinton Hill apartment to find electronics, a bicycle and a guitar missing, prosecutors said. They later found fingerprints at the apartment matching Knight.
