Rats Run Mayor Adams' Bed-Stuy Home: Records, Report

A compliance inspection found rat activity at Mayor Eric Adams' Bed-Stuy property, city records show.

BED-STUY, NY — It looks like the rats run Mayor Eric Adam's Bed-Stuy pad.

A recent compliance inspection by the city's Health department found continued rat activity at the famously rat-hating mayor's property on Lafayette Avenue, city records show.

Authorities returned to the property on Sept. 15, about a month after an initial inspection showed rat activity, according to Health department records.

Inspectors found "fresh rat droppings" and rat burrows — conditions warranting a $300 ticket, according to the New York Daily News.

It's just the most recent in Adams' epic battle with New York City's rats on the home front. The mayor has faced three other rat-related summons since May 2022, the Daily News reported.

A representative of Adams' office told the Daily News the mayor will challenge the ticket, and there was no violation at the time of the summons.

In May, the property passed an initial inspection — but in 2022, rat activity was found on multiple occasions at the property, city records show.

In February, Adams contested more fines for a rat infestation, claiming he's done everything he can and the rats are attacking the entire block, Gothamist reported.

Before that, the mayor successfully cleared a $300 rat violation over an infestation in his yard, the Daily News reported.

Bed-Stuy locals, of course, are no strangers to rat activity. The area has been identified as a rat mitigation zone for increased efforts to clear out New York's furry friends.

Rat sightings in Bed-Stuy's Community Board 3 were down 2.7 percent in August compared to the year before, city data show.

Some 1,008 rat sightings have been reported Bed-Stuy this year, reflecting a similar drop in sightings over last year.

And as Adams himself said in July: "It takes all of us to win the war on rats."
