Shootings Dropped 47% In One Bed-Stuy Precinct In 2023: DA
Across Brooklyn, shootings declined by 25 percent in 2023 as compared to the year before, according to year-end data.

BED-STUY, NY — Shootings dropped by 47 percent in 2023 in one Bed-Stuy precinct, with the borough at large seeing dramatic life-saving improvements, according to a report from the Brooklyn District Attorney's office.
Year-end data showed a decrease in all seven major crime categories in Bed-Stuy's 81st Precinct, which covers the neighborhood east of Marcus Garvey Boulevard.
Burglaries also dropped dramatically in 2023 with a 33 percent decrease over the year before, police data show.

In the neighborhood's 79th Precinct, which includes the neighborhood west of Marcus Garvey Boulevard, saw a 7 percent decrease in shootings but no change in the number of shooting victims in 2023, according to police data.
Major crimes increased by less than one percentage point in the 79th Precinct in 2023 with murders, robberies, grand larceny and grand larceny auto all seeing upticks.

Brooklyn as a whole saw a 25 percent decrease in shootings in 2023 as compared to the year before representing 112 fewer shootings, according to the District Attorney's office.
Fewer shootings meant fewer shooting victims, too — the borough saw a 27 percent decrease in shooting victims in 2023.
"These are not just numbers; these are 150 fewer people suffering gunshot injuries that would have altered their lives forever," Gonzalez said.
