BEDFORD, NY — If you’re like many of your Bedford area neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.
Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Here are 14 local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:
- Bedford Free Library: "provides materials and services to all card bearing patrons of the Westchester Library System to meet their personal, educational and professional needs."
- Bedford Hills Free Library: "provide equal and uncensored access to cultural, educational, recreational, information and services, as well as to offer programs that enhance learning, creativity, engagement, and responsible citizenship."
- Bedford Historical Society: "to preserve and promote the buildings, landmarks and artifacts that document the history of Bedford, New York; to increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of the Town’s founding and growth; and to strengthen the current and future historic character of the Town."
- Bedford Playhouse Clive Davis Arts Center: "a vibrant, state of the art cinema, cultural center and community hub, featuring outstanding films and events, arts and educational programming, and a welcoming space to relax and socialize. It is an oasis of great programming, first run films and shared excitement for the entire region."
- Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts (Katonah): "a destination for exceptional music, captivating programs, spectacular gardens and grounds, and wonderful moments with friends and family. It enriches the lives of its audiences through innovative and diverse musical performances of the highest quality. Its mission also includes mentoring young professional musicians and providing educational programs for young children centered around music."
- Community Center of Northern Westchester (Katonah): "seeks to improve the well-being and self-sufficiency of neighbors in need in Northern Westchester by providing equitable access to food, clothing, programs, and other resources."
- Family Services of Westchester (Purchase hq, White Plains, Katonah, Hastings-on-Hudson, Mount Vernon, Pelham, Port Chester, Sleepy Hollow, White Plains, Yonkers): "provides mental health and social services that strengthen and support families, children and individuals at every stage of their lives."
- Friends of the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library: "to serve the people who reside, work or attend school in North Salem through service to the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library. Their service takes the form of volunteering at the library, raising funds for selected programs and materials, and working in consultation with the library director and trustees. They receive and encourage gifts, endowments, and bequests to the library."
- Foundation for Bedford Central Schools: "to enhance learning opportunities for students of all seven schools within the district."
- Katonah Village Library: "a community resource that provides equal access to information, and facilitates the joy of reading, the exploration of ideas and engagement with the arts, sciences, and humanities for children and adults."

- North Salem Foundation for Learning: "To foster scholastic excellence in the North Salem Central School District by: warding scholarships and funding unique student/faculty projects, which are outside the scope of the traditional budget."
- Pound Ridge Library Foundation: "to support the Pound Ridge Library by raising funds to preserve, maintain, and improve the library. The foundation also aims to promote lifelong learning and community-building."
- Westchester Land Trust (Bedford Hills): "works together with public and private partners to preserve land in perpetuity, and to protect and enhance the natural resources in our communities."
