Bedford Bee Service Featured in New York Times

Local D.J. Haverkamp's honeybee service was highlighted in a story about the demand for locally-produced honey.

As the demand for local food has grown, so has the demand for locally-produced honey.

Some residents are taking their desire for the sweet stuff and harvesting it themselves in backyard hives, writes Emily DeNitto in the weekend edition of the New York Times.

A local leader in instructing residents how to do it is D.J. Haverkamp, owner of the . He teaches a beginning beekeeping course at the John Jay Homestead and runs a beehive delivery service. Each May, Haverkamp delivers bees to customers within a 30-mile radius and harvests the honey in August. He has about 40 clients with 70 hives, according to the story.

“I’ve had to turn people away,” Haverkamp told the Times. “Even though I only accept clients 30 minutes from my base, the demand is greater than my resources.”
