Bedford Police to Beef Up Holiday Security
Police will be conducting periodic security checks of train stations, commuter parking lots, bus routes, shopping areas, public parks, and houses of worship where Easter and Passover events may be held.

Local residents may notice an increased security presence over the next week or so during the Passover and Easter holiday period.
That's because Bedford police are part of a counter terrorism zone composed of law enforcement agencies across Westchester and Putnam counties that all work together to collect and analyze information to coordinate activities that prevent terrorism, according to a statement from Police Chief William Hayes.
"During the upcoming Easter/Passover Observance period law enforcement agencies...including the Bedford Police Department, will be conducting periodic security checks of train stations, commuter parking lots, bus routes, shopping malls, public parks, and houses of worship where holiday events may be held," he said.

Though the public may notice more police officers on patrol, it's not because there is an overt threat to public safety, he said—"it is simply part of our counter-terrorism strategy of continued vigilance."
The activities are part of Operation Safeguard, an initiative part of the U.S. Office of Homeland Security launched in 2004 to educate, promote and remind residents that the threat of terrorism is ongoing and that individuals and businesses can be unknowingly exploited by individuals who want to harm both our citizens and our country.
