Bedford Sculptor Offers Selected Works to Benefit Fox Lane Middle School

Ludwig "Doc" Dochtermann said he wants to do his part in preserving programs for students.

Bedford resident Ludwig Dochtermann re-purposes discarded objects for his artistic creations.

Now he's offering those creations for one singular purpose: to raise funds for Fox Lane Middle School students.

“My three children received strong educations through BCSD and now my two grandsons are benefitting from excellent educations with many sports, arts and activities," said Dochtermann, a sculptor known for his work with metals.

"Doc" is selling three pieces: Superfly, Compact Bike and the Destrier, for minimum offers of $1,000, $2,000 and $3,000, respectively, in hopes of raising $6,000 for middle school programs.

One piece Dochtermann initially planned to display, IronMan, was sold to a Bedford Hills resident for the asking price of $1,000 before it could be included in the display, he said.

The school district has faced a challenging budget season, with spending plans for next year calling for job cuts and the elimination of some sports and other activities.

Dochtermann said he decided to offer the works because of his own family's positive experiences in the school and also because his daughter in law, Christina Dochtermann, an active volunteer in Bedford schools, shared with him that budget constraints are affecting the student experience.

He hopes that his benefit sale will challenge the community to find creative ways to help support FLMS.

“If each of us does a little—be it a donation of cash, goods or services—we can preserve these programs that greatly benefit the students, like music and art, sports and clubs, that are fundamental to what makes FLMS so outstanding,” said Dochtermann.

The three pieces are on display at the middle school.
