Building at Bedford's Coker Farm Damaged in Fire

A Thursday morning fire caused damage to an outbuilding of Coker Farm in Bedford.

The Bedford Fire Department responded to the fire at 10:34 a.m., said Aric Bittker, second assistant chief. The flames were extinguished by the time Bittker arrived, which was around 11:05 a.m.

Several other departments responded to the horse farm, located at 69 Stone Hill Road (Route 137), including Mount Kisco, South Salem, Bedford Hills, Katonah, Pound Ridge and Banksville. Westchester EMS and Bedford police provided support at the scene.

Tankers were brought in to service the fire because of a lack of fire hydrants in the area, Bittker said. The fire damage occurred in a section of the building with a larger massing; the structure also has an area that appears smaller.

The building had office use and a guest room space, according to Judy Richter, the farm's owner.

There were no injuries involved.

“No one was injured. That's the main thing," said Richter.

Richter had early response help from Alan Keeley, who operates a composting business on the farm and is also a Croton Falls volunteer firefighter. She also said that he was able to save several of her possessions.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
