College Planning, Honoring Vets, Snow

It's 5 things you need to know Thursday.

1. Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day

Governor Cuomo yesterday passed a resolution proclaiming March 30, 2011 as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day," we learned from Assemblyman Robert Castelli. Yesterday was also the 38th anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam under the Treaty of Paris, and New York ranks fourth in the nation with its population of Vietnam veterans, he said in a press release. To all of the veterans I've had the good fortune to meet while reporting from the town of Bedford—thank you.

If you're one of the families currently preparing for college applications, you may want to mark your calendar for next Thursday, April 7th at 7 p.m. Educational consultants will be at the Bedford Free Library for a free program on how to get through the process. It's free of charge, but registration is required. Call (914) 234-3570. It's geared toward parents of high school sophomores and juniors.

4. This month's book selection: Half Broke Horses

Last night the Katonah Village Library wrapped up its discussion of Privileges, by Jonathan Dee. This month the library's book club has picked a title by Jeannette Walls, who also wrote Glass Houses. The book club meets every three weeks at 8 p.m. on Wednesday evenings. The next date, when Half Broke Horses will be discussed, is May 11.

5.What's that about going out like a lamb?

Let it be the last storm of the winter. The National Weather Service has issued a storm watch for late Thursday night into Friday morning. Today, little or now snow accumulation is expected. Tonight it will rain, and turn to snow sometime after 2 a.m., according to the NWS, with up to two inches of snow possible. On Friday, the chance of precipitation is 90 percent, with up to three inches of snow predicted.
