I-684 Crash Victim Rescued From Ravine After Being Ejected From Car

Katonah Fire volunteers employed a Stokes basket and rescue ropes to get the seriously injured victim to an ambulance on the overpass.

KATONAH, NY — A three-car crash on I-684 led to a tense rescue of a driver who had been ejected from a vehicle.

At about 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening, Katonah Fire Department volunteers were called to a three-car crash on I-684. There were reports that the driver of one of the vehicles had been ejected from his car. Witnesses believed that the driver had possibly fallen underneath the interstate overpass that spans Beaver Dam Road and into the water below.

The Yorktown Dive Team was requested to the scene as a precaution in case the rescue became a water rescue.

Initially, units responded both to I-684 and to Beaver Dam Rd. below in an attempt to confirm the ejection and locate the accident victim. Firefighters established the scene on I-684 while other crews established a scene below. Good Samaritans and firefighters went down the embankment and located the victim about 60 ft. below the highway in serious condition. Firefighters, Bedford police and EMTs accessed the patient from below, crossing the waterway to assist.

Rescuers determined that the best access for the removal would be from I-684. Using a Stokes basket and rescue ropes, crews extricated the patient from the ravine and moved him up to the waiting ambulance on the overpass.

The Katonah Fire Department thanked the Bedford Hills Fire Department, the Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Bedford Fire Department for their help in what was described as as "complex operation." Multiple ambulances were requested because of injuries from the initial three-car crash.
