Plant-based cooking and calming imagery among events offered in January by Northern Westchester Hospital and the Center for Healthy Living

A cooking class to learn to prepare plant-based meals that can reduce disease risk and a panel discussion about the connection between blood sugar and weight loss are the featured programs offered in January by Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) and the Center for Healthy Living. Other virtual events to help people feel better and get healthier include chair yoga, smoking cessation, and a class in calming imagery.
Located next to the Whole Foods Market at Chappaqua Crossing, the Center for Healthy Living supports health and wellness through education, health resources, diverse programing and referrals. Cooking for Reducing Disease Risk: Plant-Based Meals

Join Registered Dietitian Amy Rosenfeld for a class all about cooking plant-based meals. You will learn what plant-based eating means as well as realistic cooking techniques to prepare delicious meals minus meat, dairy, or animal products. Amy will explain the guiding principles of plant-based eating and this type of diet can help reduce chronic disease risk. Recipes will be provided ahead of time so you can cook along.

Blood Sugar and Weight Loss: What’s the Connection?
Wednesday January 26, noon – 1 pm, live over Zoom
Cost: Free
This webinar will discuss the latest information about prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and weight gain. Join the team from Northwell Health's Center for Weight Management and Diabetes Education Program for a conversation about how to achieve long-lasting weight loss with diet, exercise, goal setting, and medical management to help control blood sugar and prevent or delay the progression of prediabetes to type 2 diabetes. Healthy, carbohydrate-controlled recipes for weight loss and diabetes control will be demonstrated.

Chair Yoga
Mondays & Thursdays, January 3, 6, 10, 13, 20, 24, 27, and 31, 11 am – Noon, live over Zoom
Cost: Free
Chair Yoga is one of the gentlest forms of yoga available, adapting poses through the creative use of a chair. Emphasis will be on breathing, balance, and taking things at your own pace. This workshop is led by Toni Russo, MS, RN AHN-BC, RYT-220, a leader on NWH’s Integrative Medicine Team.

Smoking Cessation
Tuesdays, January 4, 11, and 18, 6 – 7 pm, live over Microsoft Teams
Cost: Free

Calming Imagery
Wednesday, January 19, noon – 1 pm, live over Zoom
Cost: $30 per couple
Learn how a guided imagery practice can add relaxation to your daily routine by engaging in a calming mental pause using your senses. Join Rachel Merchan, LCSW, to practice this soothing relaxation strategy and explore the benefits of guided imagery for mood and well-being. Rachel will highlight the importance of using mental exercises and sensory engagement as part of a routine relaxation strategy.
