Roelle: No Immediate Change at Increase Miller

School superintendent dispelled rumors about school closing.

Superintendent of Schools Robert Roelle said this week that Increase Miller Elementary School will not close this year, or in the next 5-7 years, without substantial enrollment analysis and further study.

In remarks at Tuesday's school board meeting, Roelle also said that central administration had no immediate plans to move there, though it may be possible in the future.

"We have declining enrollment in the district, mostly at Increase Miller, and if it dropped substantially, it might be a place we'd relocate," he said.

Roelle cited the costs of maintaining aging offices at 1 Shady Lane as a factor in the potential move. Given lower enrollment numbers, extra space at the school could also mean a relocation of the district's 6th grade population from the middle school to Increase Miller, though that would not happen this year.

Another scenario Roelle mentioned that if the 6th grade moved to IMES, room may be created for the district offices at the middle school. None of these moves would happen without the board of education undertaking a feasibility study and a demographic analysis.

Any changes would be 5-7 years from now, he added. "But it is reasonable to study the moves."

For now, any free space at the elementary school may be used for after school activities.
