An initial investigation found that Gmelin had been trying to move a log splitter that had been delivered to the property earlier that day for scheduled landscaping work, according to police. During his attempt to move the equipment, the log splitter began to roll down a sloped area and struck Gmelin, resulting in fatal injuries.
State police say that no signs of foul play are suspected, and that the investigation remains ongoing.
