Video: Kids Talk Books at Summer Reading Party

Kids dished about their favorite authors while snacking on international foods at the Bedford Free Library's summer reading game celebration of "One World, Many Stories."

In libraries around town, children wrapped up their summer reading games this week.

Shodie Alcorn, children's librarian at the Bedford Free Library, greeted a crowd of children who participated in their program Tuesday afternoon. She said about 100 children ages preschool through fifth grade signed up, and at least 65 kids actively participated all summer.

Kids set goals for the number of books they wanted, and for every two hours they logged, a raffle ticket was entered in a drawing for prizes. The most voracious readers walked away with such prizes as stacks of books from the Harry Potter, Lemony Snicket and Magic Tree House, to name a few. Each participant in the program received a goody bag.

Staff and library volunteeers were on hand serving snacks from around the world, like Chinese dumplings and German bratwurst, fitting for the "One World, Many Stories" theme adopted by Bedford from New York State.

A steady rain prevented the library from using their full outdoor space but kids and familied fanned out across the porch out back to mix and mingle.
