Video: New Police Chief Sworn In
William Hayes was sworn in as Chief of Police of the Bedford Police Department last week.
The sound of bagpipes filled the town courthouse as the swearing-in ceremony for , began.
Close to one hundred residents, officers, town administrators and friends and family of Hayes gathered to witness his official oath-taking. Hayes is only the 8th chief of police to take the helm in the departments 101-year history.
At the town board meeting the night before the ceremony, Hayes was officially moved into the position, while Acting Chief Edward Collins formally returned to his position as Lieutenant.

Collins thanked his wife, colleagues in the department and town administrators for supporting him throughout his temporary tenure. Town Roberts commemorated Collins' tenure as acting chief with a poem she composed.
"He's very good with people and his humor always shows, doing great police work is only part of what he knows...we can never fully tell him how great a chief he's been, but making Ed Lieutenant gives the town another win," she quipped.

Collins was thanked for his 40 years of service and greeted with a round of applause.
Hayes said he was honored for the opportunity to serve the town, and he welcomed the responsibility. "I have big shoes to fill in terms of the high standards set by my predecessors, and will do my very best to meet your expectations, he said.
