American Legion and Members of the Young Marines Honor Dick Hartney, Resident of The Bristal Assisted Living

Representatives of American Legion Post 336 and members of The Young Marines, honored 89 year-old Korean War Veteran Dick Hartney, when they visited him at The Bristal Assisted Living at Massapequa. Hartney took part in the Battle of Chosin, which is regarded by historians as a one of the most brutal battles of modern times.

Veterans who served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf War joined Hartney and his son Richard, presenting him with an engraved clock. The members of Post 336 describe Dick as being a “doer”, someone that always helped in any capacity and an inspiration to the next generation.

Hartney grew up in Sea Cliff, he was a prolific high school athlete, participating in four sports; track, basketball, baseball and soccer, earning him “Four Letter-Man” status. Dick and his wife Carol raised five children, and today he has 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Dick worked at Grumman Aerospace for 26 years as a maintenance electrician, during the building of the Lunar Excursion Module. His picture hangs on a banner on Main Street in Sea Cliff through a program that honors veterans called Hometown Heroes.
